Always his Little Girl
Do you remember the big hugs and “thank-you”s you got, when you gave your dad homemade gifts? Well, everything old is new again. Remind your dad how special he is by creating a nostalgic gift or giving him a token that takes him back down memory lane. The goal? To help him know that, no matter what, you’ll always be his little girl. Here are a handful of ideas for nostalgic gifts, he’s sure to treasure.
- A Loving Note on a Very Special Picture Card
Here’s a simple idea that’s sure to capture his heart. Accordion fold an eleven by seventeen sheet of paper. Trim to desired size. Mount black and white pictures of the two of you through the years and add dates. Leave a blank space at the end of the card, and write a special note to him letting him know that you treasure your memories - past, present and future.
- A Cookbook of Memories
Was your dad a terrific chef? Or did he at least try hard on mom’s night off? Write down your memories of his culinary works in a cookbook style. Or want to give him a 3D package that will thrill him? Package up all of the foods that you associate with him - the black olives he taught you to eat off your fingers, the Cherri-Os he fed you each morning for breakfast, the instant cocoa that was his specialty - and deliver the box together with a note that details all of your memories. You’ll be amazed at how much your memories mean to him.
- Travels with My Dad - A Travel Memoir
Did your dad pack up the family and take you to the grand canyon? Or was he an international traveler, and the first to introduce you to La Tour Eiffel? Collect the pictures and put words to them. Those journeys through your eyes are a special and nostalgic gift for your father.
- The Stories He Tells - A Collection of My Dad’s Very Best Bedtime Stories
My own father was a terrific storyteller. And every night he would coax us into bed with the promise of another adventure of Freddy the Frog, or even better one of the true adventures from his youth. If your dad was a storyteller like mine, why not pay tribute? Write down the best of his stories and have them bound. Have artistic flair? Illustrate his stories. You may even convince him to embark on a second career as a children’s book author.
- Wedding Planning Epistles
Is your dad on one coast and you’re on another? Or does he just feel out of touch with the process - with aunts and moms having jumped in as your primary advisors. Including him in the plans by writing letters about the process. Include some details about the plans, but make sure to tell him how you’re feeling. Not only will he treasure them now, you’ll treasure them in years to come.
